3Di is able to simulate all processes in the hydrological cycle allowing the modeller to use 3Di in a wide range of applications

Pluvial flood

Flooding as a result of heavy rainfall. Options range from using simple rainfall timeseries to rainfall radar and weather forecast models. Thanks to the subgrid method, wetting and drying is automatically taken into account. This makes 3Di very stable for these situations. With the integrated calculation of surface- , sewerage - and freatic ground water flow it is possible to calculate the result of heavy rainfall in great detail, with high accuracy.

Fluvial flood

In case of a high water wave in rivers, banks can be over topped, dikes can be breached and water is flowing in to surrounding areas. Using 3Di the flood and after effect of floods can be computed well. Including the flow and the arrival of the high water wave. As for the drainage of the flooded area, the sewer system, small networks of canals and you hydrological balance are crucial.

Coastal and Estuary

The original application of the foundation of 3Di, the subgrid method. These areas are characterized by strong variations in bathymetry and generally the dominant forcing are the tides. Calamity flood models

Area’s that are prone to flooding events can be digitized in calamity models. The calamity can be a result of heavy rainfall or for example due to the breaching of dikes and dams. Stakeholders, ranging from policymakers to emergency services, can simulate these scenarios. For dike breaching events, the breaches can be triggered at the location of the emergency and the breach will evolve in time. This results in the most accurate prediction possible.

Resilient urban planning

Urban planning is usually done by urban planners. With 3Di we have solutions that make it possible to convert a planning design to a 3D environment suitable for hydrodynamic calculations. 3Di computes all interaction between different domain, such as surface flow, groundwater and the sewer system. It can support the planning process in every step from the 1st design up to the final design. Iterative checking the climate resilience of the designs.

Sewerage design

3Di can be used for sewerage design. The 3Di data models of the sewer system match asset management standards. 3Di aims for a seamless transition. Automatic transitions between pressurized and unpressurized flows make the simulation very stable. Simply click in your design and test against predefined design rainfall events. Operational models

Used within areas like polders or hydrodams. The results of operational models are fed into process automation solutions and can trigger action. The API of 3Di makes it ideal to interface with these type of solutions. Types of action are start pumping a certain area or set the crest level of a weir to maintain the water level in a pumped drainage area. Open the spillway gates of a hydrodam to generate power.

Flood forecasting

Nobody should be surprised by a flood. New data sources like satellite data ensure a global coverage. 3Di is already able to define an accurate surface flow with a high resolution DEM. The API of 3Di makes it ideal to integrate flood forecasting models in dashboard applications. And with all delivered via the cloud it does not depend on strong hardware specifications. Any suitable 3Di model can be deployed as a flood forecasting model.

Water Quality

Create insights on the spread of substances and the age of water using the water quality module. In a fraction analysis, supply sources of water, such as pumping stations, inlets or water treatment plants effluent or an incidental discharge are marked as fractions. With 3Di It is possible to calculate from the water flow how the fractions are distributed spatially and temporally. The analysis can be further extended with an analysis of the age/residence time of the water.

Ground water flooding

In areas with a high freatic water table, flooding can occur when the water level rises higher than the surface. 3Di is very strong in calculating the interaction between groundwater and surface water in cases of flooding.
