Soil processes that affect the groundwater flow are extremely complex. This, combined with a lack of detailed information about soil characteristics, makes accurate groundwater modelling extremely difficult. In 3Di we have focused on modelling the effects of groundwater in situations of heavy precipitation and inundation. The processes dominant in this kind of application include:

  • We assume that below the phreatic surface the soil is fully saturated and above it, the soil is to be dry.
  • We assume that pressure increases linearly in the groundwater according to the Dupuit assumption.
  • We applying Horton infiltration rules.
  • A bottom boundary condition can be added to the system to account for interaction with deeper groundwater.
